Gen Y Wants to Make NASA Fun
Okay I’m not a Gen Y (more of a Barack-Obama defined Gen Xer) but I didn’t think there would be much of a generational divide on this one: surely EVERYONE thinks that it would be fun to be an astronaut? Apparently not. Like everyone else, NASA is fighting to get the best and the brightest to work for them and of course that situation is only going to get worse (old story, aging population etc. etc.).
Well, apparently a group of Gen Ys who work at NASA have put together a clever powerpoint presentation that has a few practical suggestions on how to make NASA seem like a cool place to work for their generation. You can read more about it here, and you can also download the actual presentation (check out the graphs on the age of NASA workers). I didn’t find it that radical (mostly they suggest using different technology to communicate with teens and twentysomethings, and maybe getting more involved in classrooms), but apparently they are ruffling some feathers by suggesting that anything needs to change. That’s an old story too (’who do they think they are? They’d be LUCKY to work here’ etc. etc.) .
I’ve written before (in the book and in this blog) about companies who are re-thinking how they can get Gen Y workers in and keep them in. Maybe NASA could learn a few things from trailblazers like Staples and Fedex.
